Azure Application and Database Modernization

Project Summary

Phased modernization of an application suite from on-premises components to Azure platform services.  The plan assessed Azure SQL compatibility and remediation required, Windows and web services, message and storage queues, application communications, certificate/secrets handling, SQL Agent jobs, and a PDF distiller component, all to be incorporated into the target architecture and deployment strategy.

Delivery used an integrative / Agile development-first sequence with sprints, demos, and releases.  Websites moved to App Services, Windows services moved to WebJobs, SOAP services moved to App Services, SQL databases moved to Azure SQL through DMA/DMS.  Scheduled jobs were migrated to use Logic Apps, and secrets were migrated Key Vault.

The production sequence repeated this proven pattern, and included a live SQL cutover, traffic change, end-to-end testing, build documentation, and client handover.

Project Details
  • Five planned sprints and demos overlay a plan–analyse–design–implement structure.
  • Schedule developed to explicitly separate development and production environments.
  • SQL assessment/remediation preceded database migration
  • Live production SQL cutover, production traffic change, end-to-end testing, troubleshooting, and final handover were explicitly planned.
demonstrated capabilities

Knowledge and understanding of enterprise application modernization, databases, cloud PaaS, dev-to-prod sequencing, cutover design, testing, and technical dependency management.  Established and structured an Agile / DevOps iterative development and testing approach using Azure DevOps Boards, requiring the coordination of multiple technical workstreams and teams.

Example of Budget Status component of weekly client status report. Generated in Microsoft Project using EVM and forecast analysis based on task completion against the project baseline.
